Three Tacoma police officers who were acquitted in the death of Manuel Ellis, a Black man who died in police custody in 2020 after pleading that he could not breathe, will each receive $500,000 for resigning from the Tacoma Police Department, according to documents released by the city on Tuesday. Two of the officers, Christopher Burbank, 38 and Matthew Collins, 40, both white, were acquitted last month on charges of second-degree murder. On Tuesday, Chief Avery L. Moore of the Tacoma Police Department said in a statement that the three officers had “voluntarily agreed” to resign from their positions. Though Mr. Collins violated the department’s 2020 policy on courtesy, all three men had otherwise been cleared of departmental violations based on policies at the time, Chief Moore said. “I acknowledge the detrimental impact of policing on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, extending both a personal and collective apology,” he said.

Ms. Ellis emerged from her plea hearing as a likely star witness for prosecutors, starting with the one who secured her cooperation, the Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis. Ms. Ellis is poised to be a potent weapon against Mr. Trump in the courtroom and on TVs. That is bad news for her former co-defendants — above all, Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Trump. Ms. Ellis was most closely associated with Mr. Giuliani, appearing by his side in Georgia and across the country. Ms. Ellis’s likely trial testimony will also hit Mr. Trump hard.

A spokesman for Mr. Giuliani did not immediately respond to a request for comment. With her guilty plea, Ms. Ellis became the fourth defendant — and the third lawyer — in the case to reach a cooperation deal with Fani T. Willis, the Fulton County district attorney. While a person familiar with Ms. Ellis’s thinking described her as being extremely angry at Mr. Giuliani, her cooperation could be perilous for Mr. Trump as well. Indeed, if Ms. Ellis, Ms. Powell and Mr. Chesebro all end up taking the stand, they could paint a detailed collective portrait of Mr. Trump’s activities in the postelection period. They could touch upon a brazen plot, rejected by Mr. Trump, to use the military to seize the country’s voting machines.

She had been running, by that stage, for roughly 100 minutes, mounting what appeared at times to be a fearsome, one-woman campaign to keep South Africa in the Women’s World Cup for as long as possible. But Kgatlana, as she had already amply proved in this tournament, does not believe in stopping. First, she spun and writhed and twisted away from a defender, leaving her sprawled on the turf. The Netherlands, in the end, went through to the quarterfinals, where Spain lies in wait in Wellington, New Zealand. Image Thembi Kgatlana, whose goal against Italy had sent South Africa to the round of 16, did all she could to extend its stay.

Suspected suicide attempts among adolescents Ellis’s age were up 49 percent in 2021 compared with prepandemic levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Because it did not contextualize in any way what the issues were in my son’s suicide. And it says the school is being proactive to deal with this mental health crisis. Totally dishonest.”Jeffrey Gural, Ellis’s grandfather, also pressed the school’s board of trustees. The elder Mr. Gural is chairman of GFP Real Estate L.L.C.

Opinion | A Push to Reverse ‘Wokeness’ at U.Va.

I served on a committee in 1973 to help the new Black students there adjust to an institution that was clearly not welcoming. If racism is not systemic, how could there have been so little progress for so long? This is a sad story and a tragic denouement for all the efforts of good people at U.Va. I deplore Mr. Ellis’s attempts to further entrench a history of obliviousness to racism at U.Va. Both of us serve today as trustees of Virginia’s best universities, appointed by Virginia governors, though at different schools.
‘Unstable’ Review: Comic Highs With a New Lowe
  + stars: | 2023-03-31 | by ( John Anderson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Rob Lowe ’s hair is as monumental as his character’s ego in the eight-episode “Unstable,” which has a perversely magical secret: Its people would be obnoxious if they weren’t so charming. It’s “Seinfeldian” in a sense, self-absorption being the defining comic quality of most of the characters, who have no intention of changing. But “Unstable” is not a show about nothing: Ellis Dragon (Mr. Lowe), an incorrigibly eccentric chem-tech billionaire who has developed a biodegradable alternative to plastic, is relentlessly judgmental, flamboyantly narcissistic and has an insistent cheer that masks the fact he’s mourning his wife of 30 years. His son, Jackson ( John Owen Lowe ), despite being the child of a nut who guilts him relentlessly (and who has just lost his mother), is extraordinarily normal, perhaps the most normal-seeming character who has ever inhabited a sitcom. But no: Ellis’s second-in-command, Anna Bennet (the epic Sian Clifford of “Fleabag”), wouldn’t allow it, though she’s kept awfully busy wrangling Ellis into a state of productivity.
